Maryport

Situated on the Solway Firth, Maryport is an historical Roman coastal town. Maryport dates back to 200 years ago when the Roman arrived and set-up fort at Camp Road for 300 years.

In 1749 Humphrey Senhouse developed the town and harbour, and later called the town Maryport after his wife.

In the 19th century, Maryport continued to develop and grow and in the second half of the century, Maryport opened two docks and these were the largest on the West Cumbrian coast. Up until 1927, the docks served the coal and steel industries and now the docks have been converted into a marina and harbour to hold a number of visitor attractions. Maryport's history can be found at the Roman museum on Camp Road and the Maritime Museum on Shipping Brow (near the harbour). Thomas Ismay the founder of the the White Star Line was born in Maryport and spent most of his life there, his birth place, home and his places of interest are highlighted by a trail round the town. Other maritime links include Fletcher Christian, famed for mutiny on the Bounty.
